Researchers discovered that the self-propagating WannaCry ransomware that has been targeting organizations since 2017 was by far the most identified ransomware family in January 2022, it was concluded that WannaCry ransomware holds a biggest share of 43% of the total infections. The analysis used a dataset of 10.5 million infections, with about 4.5 million of those being WannaCry infections.

This demonstrates that not only are ransomware attacks on the rise, but threat actors are also succeeding in infiltrating systems with years-old software.
